Building on the work started with our HWCF Evaluation, the UNCFRP team is working to examine how various socio-economic factors (including the Great Recession, price changes) affect short-term and long-term food purchases and dietary intake between and within critical race/ethnic and SES subpopulations.
We’re working to expand our food monitoring system to include data from 2000-2015, linking Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) products to USDA food codes used in What We Eat In America (WWEIA-NHANES) over 7 cycles. Our team is including sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, and added sugars as outcome measures in our system. We’re estimating the added sugar content of products purchased in 2000-2015, in order to understand trends in amounts of added sugar in products purchased in the US overall and by critical subpopulations. Our expanded system will also allow us to study the impact of retail/store type (e.g. grocery stores vs. convenience stores vs. drug stores vs. supercenters) and brand type (e.g. private label/store brands vs. national brands) on purchases, and how these may differ across and within race/ethnic and SES subpopulations.
